China Unicom expects strong 3G growth in near future

In a Tuesday statement, China Unicom’s Chairman Chang Xiaobing said that the carrier, which began offering the popular Apple iPhone in China last week after its October 1 launch of 3G services, had already signed up over one million 3G subscribers by the end of October.

The touch-screen handset will be available at a retail price of nearly 5,000 yuan - though the company is yet to disclose details about the models that will be available.

According UBS analyst, Maynard Um, the Friday-announced deal between Apple and China Unicom will likely bring about the addition of nearly one million iPhones to Apple's sales during its fiscal 2010, after China Unicom starts selling iPhones in the 2009 fourth quarter.
