Matrixx Initiatives Inc., said Tuesday it received an informal inquiry from the Securities and Exchange Commission, asking for documents and information related to a warning letter it received from the Food and Drug Administration last week.

Zicam, a cold and allergy product by Matrixx Initiatives Inc. was issued a warning letter by the Food and Drug Administration earlier this week to stop selling the nasal versions as the products contain zinc and FDA officials have said there is evidence that zinc could be toxic when delivered through the nose.

Matrixx Initiatives' Zicam Cold Remedy nasal gel and related products have come under the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scanner, on concerns that the zinc- containing intranasal products can lead to long-lasting or permanent anosmia - or loss of the sense of smell.
