Ontario to table controversial HST bill on Monday

The Ontario Government will introduce legislation on Monday to create a single 13% sales tax by merging province’s 8% sales tax with the 5% Goods & Services Tax.

The bill includes a series of cuts to income, small business and corporate taxes.

Ontario's deficit swells to $6.4-billion

The recent global economic slump caused a steep plunge in Ontario government tax revenues, pushing the province's deficit for 2008-09 to $6.4 billion.

The Ministry of Finance said the recent recession caused a 0.5 per cent contraction in Ontario's GDP in 2008.
