Toyota Motor Corp (7203. T) revealed on Thursday that it will recall millions more vehicles in the United States, its second largest recall in four months, this time on account to fix potentially faulty accelerator pedals.
The latest recall, reportedly affecting 2.3 million vehicles, pointed an acknowledgment that potential problems with dangerous acceleration on Toyota vehicles was much worse than the automaker had first announced and implemented a recall that already accounted for its largest ever.
Safety expert Sean Kane said that since previous fall, when Toyota revealed it had managed to cure the acceleration problem implementing changes to gas pedals and a recall of 4.2 million cars with suspect floor mats, more than 60 new cases of runaway Toyotas have been reported.
The recalls have wounded Toyota's reputation for superior quality and safety at a time when the automaker's U. S. sales endured soaring pressure.
After the announcement its shares witnessed a fall of 3.3 percent to 4,050 yen on Friday morning in Tokyo, underperforming the Nikkei stock average's 2.7 percent drop.
Federal safety investigators have initiated an investigation, according to Lt. Brown. Toyota executives had claimed in November that the recall of the floor mats in certain models and a proposed redesign of the accelerator pedal would fix the problem.
