A new study states that ordinary face masks and hand hygiene could help stop the spread of influenza-like illness.
Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, about 1,400 college students residing in university residence halls during the 2006-2007 influenza season were analyzed by researchers.
These students were divided into three groups. One group wore masks, another who wore face masks as well as used a hand sanitizer and the third group did nothing of this.
They were monitored for about six weeks for influenza-like symptoms. The research team led by Allison E. Aiello, PhD, observed that there was a decline in symptoms of influenza in the first two groups.
Researchers further stated that H1N1 pandemic could be managed by using masks to some extent.
Researchers said, "The effect on influenza transmission could be substantial, particularly early in a pandemic when vaccine supply will almost certainly be limited, as with the current H1N1 pandemic."
