Dokic closes in on Australian Open wild card

Melbourne, Australia - Former world number four Jelena Dokic stands just one victory away from her first spot in the Australian Open since 2006 after winning a semi-final match on Saturday in the wild card playoff.

Dokic, 25 and fighting to lift her number 179 ranking, will play the Sunday final as she takes on teenaged Monika Wejnert for the second time this week.

Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Dokic continues to improve with each match, dispatching Emelyn Starr 6-1, 6-1 in a semi-final.

Over the past nine editions, Dokic has played at Melbourne Park on only two occasions, 2001 and 2006.

After a slow start at the beginning of the week, Dokic said she still has some reserves in her racket. "I'm still not playing to my maximum and I'm trying to get there slowly.

"I was trying to do it too fast and too soon in the first two matches and was just making some unnecessary errors. After my loss (in round-robin to Wejnert) in the round robin I was really disappointed.

"I had really tried to focus a lot more and that was a careless performance and shouldn't have happened so maybe it was good for me in a way."

Dokic called the looming re-match "a good test for me. In a way, my loss helped me, I've really put up my level in the last three days." (dpa)
