The news about the reality TV show star Heidi Montag last week about her going under the knife with 10 plastic surgeries, all in one day, left many in a horror rather than surprise.
However, Montag, 23, has claimed that she's not addicted to cosmetic procedures; some psychologists still pose a doubt.
To this, experts cite that this is not just her obsession to look perfect by enduring multiple cosmetic enhancements, but a phenomenon to which she is addicted, or at least a binge behavior.
Now, nine weeks after her dramatic transformation, Montag is facing the horrified reaction of her mom, Darlene Egelhoff, who said, "I still can't believe I'm 23 and mom is reacting this way", Montag tells PEOPLE. "I'm nervous to go home and face her - especially with cameras rolling".
Though plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures are ubiquitous and are witnessing a rise, but Montag's surgeries may have shocked fans.
An estimated 12.1 million cosmetic procedures were performed in 2008, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), up 3 percent from the year before. Also the ASPS speculate that number will jump to 55 million by 2015.
Rising to questions as why she had gone under the knife and that too so rapidly, experts cited some can be provoked by an irrational zeal to be more socially accepted, or appear less ethnic rather than the desire to look younger.
