Ralph Martins, a researcher of Alzheimer’s disease of Indian-origin, has been bestowed the honor of Australian of the Year 2010 by the Western Australian government.

Martins, a professor, moved to Perth in Australia at the age of sixteen and his parents were from India.

He is joined with several other recipients from other Australian states and territories as finalists for the national awards which will be announced in Canberra on January 25th.

Australian high commissioner to India, Peter Varghese, said: “The award signals Professor Martins' contributions to research on Alzheimer's disease. It is recognition of the contribution by Professor Martins to medical science.”

He also said that he was extremely happy that professor Martins has been honored. His Indian background speaks about the contributions of the ‘Diaspora’ in Australia and testifies the multicultural nature of Australian society.

Martins achievement on the breakthrough Alzheimer’s disease research is shared with specialists in India.

Martins is currently collaborating with Jacob Roy, president and founder of the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI) which is involved in running clinics and research centers in India.
