Women Being Coerced to Become Pregnant

A study, which appears online in the January issue of Contraception, reveals that male partners of teenage girls and young women who undergo physical and sexual violence also often try to sabotage the birth control the women are using.

In addition, Dr. Elizabeth Miller of the University of California Davis, and colleagues, reported that about 20% of women at family clinics across northern California claimed that their partner tried to coerce them into having a child, opting methods as poking holes in condoms or throwing birth control pills down the toilet.

The research initiated during 2008-2009, was carried out at five health clinics that deal with reproductive issues in Northern California, and involved 1,300 women aged 16 to 29, responding to a computerized survey.

The survey cited that 15 percent revealed they experienced birth-control sabotage, and more than 50% claimed physical or sexual violence from a partner. While above 33% of those who said they had been the experiencing violence from her partner also admitted experiencing either pregnancy coercion or birth-control sabotage.

In addition, Dr. Mays also said she has witnessed cases in which an amateur mother who has a child by another partner has been threatened and forced by her new boyfriend to have another baby with him.

Another study by Amy Bonomi of Ohio State University claims that for men, it’s the only best way to make their partners more dependent on them.
