Controlling your sugar too much might increase chances of premature death in people with type 2 diabetes. This risk becomes more severe among patients taking insulin.
Experts believe that diabetic people should try to lower blood sugar levels by making lifestyle changes, insulin or medication but should not go overboard.
Dr Daniel Bessesen, professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Denver and chief of endocrinology at Denver Health Medical Center, said, “Few people who achieved really low levels seemed to cause problems in this study. You could get into a car wreck if you have hypoglycemia and you are driving.”
Experts state that low blood glucose levels will initiate microvascular complications, that would affect your eyes, kidneys and limbs and macrovascular complications could raise the risk of heart attack and stroke.
About 28,000 people with type 2 diabetes were analyzed by Cardiff researchers. These people were taking a combination of metformin also known as Glucophage and sulphonylureas.
Another lot of 20,000 individuals who were observed were taking insulin.
Individuals who had lowest blood sugar levels that measured median HbA1c of 6.4 percent had more risk of death than those with a 7.5 percent HbA1c.
