Going by the most recent information forwarded by researcher ISuppli Corp., Apple’s newly-unveiled tablet computer device, iPad, will “likely” make use of liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) from LG Display Co. and Innolux Display Corp.
Noting that the Apple iPad displays will essentially use the same touch-screen technology as its iPhone and iPod Touch devices, ISuppli said in an email that Apple will probably get LCDs for the iPad from three suppliers.
However, further revealing that Apple has placed a large volume order for displays with flat-screen maker LG Display, an unnamed “inside” source said: “LG Display has won a contract to be the major supplier of the displays used in tablet PCs. Apple may not have many other vendors.”
While the Seoul-based LG Display’s spokesman Park Sang Bae refused to corroborate the ISuppli report, it is said that, as per a January 2009 deal between Apple and LG Display, the latter will supply display panels to Apple for five years.
Meanwhile, priced in the range of between $499 and $829, the 9.7-inch touchscreen Apple iPad, which has the potential to be yet another “substantial” success for the Cupertino, California-based company, will hit the stores towards the end of March. The tablet looks like an iPod Touch; and would enable the users to browse the Web, play games, and read email and books.
