Scientists have managed to hit upon a discovery which might be able to altogether revolutionize stem cell therapy, but more research has to be done in order to cement the findings.
A team of scientists at the Stanford University have reportedly been able to create brain nerve cells, directly out of skin cells that were taken from the tails of adult mice. The new method could be a breakthrough in the world of human stem cell therapy.
Also, through the discovery, researchers are positive that science's understanding of how cells choose, and keep intact, their specialized roles in the human body could be improved manifolds.
"We were blown away. We wanted to ask the question, 'Do we have to go back in development to be able to go forward or can there be a direct way'. This is the first direct conversion that is totally artificial. It doesn't occur in nature", said Dr. Marius Wernig.
Details of the research have been published in the journal Nature.
