Research states that using ‘I’ is not good for staying happy. The key word to happiness for individuals as well as couples is ‘We’.
Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, state that using ‘We’ would ensure a happier marriage.
Robert Levenson, professor of psychology and co-author of the study, said, “Individuality is a deeply ingrained value in American society, but, at least in the realm of marriage, being part of a ‘we’ is well worth giving up a bit of ‘me’.”
Two other words stated by researchers to be happy are ‘Us’ and ‘Our’.
The study claims that “We-ness” helps partners to resolve differences soon.
For concluding the above statements researchers followed 154 middle-aged and older married couples. They were made to discuss things that were based on reasons of disagreement in their marriages.
It was later analyzed that conversations went on smoothly for people who used ‘We’ more. It was seen that the word ‘We’ was used more by older couples.
Details of these findings are published in the journal, Psychology and Aging.
