Premier Danny Williams’ decision to undergo a heart surgery in the United States has raised much speculation among the politicians and health experts.
Experts say that it would have helped if the 60-year-old Premier would have shared more details about the procedure he’ll be undergoing and why he can’t get it in Canada.
Deputy Premier, Kathy Dunderdale, has said that the kind of treatment William requires would not be available in Newfoundland.
“The silence is problematic. How we fund health care, has not been on the radar. Politicians are deathly afraid of discussing this and it really is something that should be out in the open”, said Mr. Doug Angus, Health Economist at the University of Ottawa.
“We know patients die on waiting lists. There is every justification for what he’s doing. But the priority system does work. We can safely triage people”, said Kori Kingsbury, the CEO of the Cardiac Care Network in Ontario.
Furthermore, Dr. Asim Cheema, a Professor of Cardiology from the University of Toronto and a doctor at St. Michael’s Hospital, said that there is no procedure in cardiology and cardiac surgery that is done in the United States but not in Canada.
