February 5 this year is all set to be recognized as the National Wear Red Day, a day on which Americans are encouraged to adorn red in order to show their support for women's heart disease awareness. Celebrities, charities, regular everyday people and cities are getting ready to show their support and appreciation for the cause, all the while also trying to raise awareness.
"Although significant progress has been made in increasing awareness among women from 34 percent in 2000 to 69 percent in 2009 — most fail to make the connection between its risk factors and their personal risk of developing heart disease. In fact, heart disease kills one out of every four American women", states to The Heart Truth's official website while stressing the importance of the cause.
While there are many women who are making every effort to get regular Pap smear tests and mammograms, there are many more who are still unaware of the risks associated with heart diseases. Even today, it is thought of as primarily a male problem.
The misconceptions and the lack of awareness are exactly the reasons why the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services has come up with efforts like The Heart Truth, National Wear Red Day and the Red Dress.
