Efforts Need to be Intensified in Order to Ensure Proper Adult Immunization

Official figures have revealed that about a third of the American adults aged 65 and above have not received vaccination to protect them against pneumonia, and the number has been shared in a national report which describes these unvaccinated adults as representatives of millions of Americans who are vulnerable to diseases that can be prevented easily by vaccines.

The report has surprisingly revealed that rates of coverage for other diseases which can be prevented via vaccines are much lower. While 97% of eligible American adult population has not been vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis, a whopping 90% of eligible adult women have not received shots that can prevent the virus which causes cervical cancer. 64% of all adults, on the other hand, have not been vaccinated against seasonal flu.

As has been revealed by the report, about 40,000 to 50,000 Americans die as a result of vaccine-preventable disease across the country every year.

The report has been released online as the "Adult Immunization: Shots to Save Lives" by the Trust for America's Health, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
