For her splendid performance in The Last Station, Helen Mirren has just bagged an Oscar nomination, and rightly so! In her performance as Sofya Tolstoy, wife of iconic Russian author Leo Tolstoy, played by Christopher Plummer, the British actress has pumped all her vigor and energy, and it seems that no one could have played the part of the wife, who was both the "balm and bane" of Leo's existence, better.
The Last Station has been based on Jay Parini's novel and revolves around the last years of Tolstoy's life. The novel itself has been based on several diaries of the subjects. The movie depicts the life of the couple when Leo was living at his family estate in an almost always ongoing battle with Sofya over his publishing copyrights.
While Leo wanted to give the rights to the people of Russia, his wife was of the strong opinion that these belonged with the family.
While Plummer also received a nomination for his portrayal of the author, it is Mirren who seems to have stolen the show.
