Two wards are reported to have shut down and one partially closed at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital on account of an outbreak of the Norovirus.

General medicine wards two and six, plus ear, nose and throat ward 26 were the reported as latest casualties of the bug, joining the medicine and cardiovascular ward three on the list of closures.

These wards have been shut down to new patients in line with the initiated precautionary measure to curb the spreading of the virus and all appropriate infection control measures have put in force.

The virus, which causes extreme diarrhea and vomiting, is common in the winter and can be spread from an infected person by consuming contaminated food or water or by contact with contaminated surfaces or objects.

A spokesman said, "The Trust has robust plans in place to help contain the virus and to make sure that the hospital runs as smoothly as possible".

It is also revealed that patients in as stable condition will be able to go home, however, those leaving the hospital to continue their treatment elsewhere, may need to stay a little longer to make sure they are not affected by the bug.

Visitors are still allowed to the wards but are advised to wash their hands before and after visiting.
