According to the recent statistics forwarded by market research group comScore, Apple’s share of the US smartphone market increased by one percentage point in December 2009; with the mobile market still continuing its growth phase.

Noting that a total of 234 million people in the US used one or the other mobile devices in the month of December, the comScore report also indicated that the top slot among the US mobile handset manufactures was still being retained by Motorola; even though its market share plunged 140 points to 23.5 percent.

Meanwhile, Blackberry-maker Research in Motion (RIM) actually commanded the smartphone market with a little more than 41 percent of the installed base in December; and the one percentage point increase took Apple’s mobile market share to over 25 percent, from its September figures of 24.1 percent.

In addition, the comScore data has also revealed that the US market share of Google’s Android mobile phone operating system – which is widely being perceived as Google’s challenge to the highly popular iPhone - increased over two-fold from September to December 2009.

As per the comScore statistics, the share of the Android, which was 2.5 percent in September, doubled to almost 5.2 percent in December. However, RIM, Microsoft, and Palm lost US smartphone market share during the reporting month.
