Calorie Labeling Effort to be Effectively Supported by the Beverage Industry
Coke and Pepsi

New labeling plans have now been unveiled by the beverage industry, including giant like Coke and Pepsi, that will be moving the calorie content in soft drinks and other beverages to the front of the containers by the time 2012 rolls in, a move which is a part of the broader initiative promoted by First Lady Michelle Obama.

PepsiCo and Coca-Cola Co., were among the leading beverage manufacturers who issued statements in support of the initiative, which will include vending machines and fountain-drink equipment as well. Containers of up-to 20 ounces will be effectively labeled with total calories, while containers which are multi-server will have labels based in 12-ounce servings.

The First Lady's campaign is a part of a Government-backed effort to try and employ measures to tackle the rapidly expanding waistlines of the country's population.

Although promises have been made that the new labels will be introduced soon, no before-and-after samples were provided by the American Beverage Association, mainly because the labels are still in their development stage.
