Narrowing of Neck Veins Could be Linked to MS, Study Suggests

A recent study has managed to discover that there could be a link between narrowing of neck veins and multiple sclerosis, as over 50% of the patients with the disorder, and about a quarter of healthy people researched displayed the narrowing.

On Wednesday, while releasing the results of the study, researchers said that 55% of the people suffering from MS who were studied had narrowing of veins that controlled that flow of blood from the brain, compared with a mere
26% of the healthy population studied, which included some subjects who were relatives of patients with MS.

Multiple sclerosis is a neurodegenerative condition that attacks the brain and spinal cord, and ends up causing inflammation and damage that can further lead to paralysis and sometimes blindness.

"If somebody has two jugular veins closed then this is probably a high association to MS and probably the diagnosis can be established with stronger confidence", said lead researcher Dr. Robert Zivadinov, an associate professor of neurology at the University of Buffalo.
