Beer adds up to bone health

There is a good news for beer drinkers. Researchers from the Department of Food Science and Technology at the University of California, In a recent research have concluded that because beer is a rich source of silicon can prevent osteoporosis. This is because bone mineral density is increased by dietary silicon.

These facts were stated after researchers tested the silicon content of 100 commercial beers and classified data according to the style in which beer was made and source.

Earlier studies did show that silicon was present in beer but not much was known about there was a difference in silicon levels in various kinds of beers and malting processes.

Researcher Charles Bamforth said, “We have examined a wide range of beer styles for their silicon content and have also studied the impact of raw materials and the brewing process on the quantities of silicon that enter wort and beer.”

A person consumes 20 to 50 mgs of silicon daily and beer’s silicon content was 6.4 milligrams per litre to 56.5 mg per litre. The facts were given in the study, published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

“Beers containing high levels of malted barley and hops are richest in silicon,” said Bamforth.

Bamforth however stated that the results shouldn't be taken too serious.
