Low levels of natural antibodies leads to stroke

According to a new study, main reason of a stroke can be absence of a kind of antibody in the immune system.

These findings by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden are believed to make way for a new vaccine that would enable a body in mustering up body's own ability to fight against arteriosclerosis and stroke.

Researchers in the study looked at stroke specifically stroke, a blood clot in the brain. For doing this they compared 227 individuals over a 13-year period who had suffered stroke with 445 controls of sex and age.

The risk of stroke is increased three-fold in women. The reaserchers concluded that low levels of PC antibodies, which is below 30 per cent of average antibodies makes way for a risk of stroke.

It was concluded that low levels of PC antibodies in our immune system initiated the development of arteriosclerosis and ultimately stroke.

Every year in Ireland alone around 10,000 people suffer a stroke. Details of these findings are published in the journal, Stroke.
