Verizon may add Skype to its phones

United States’ leading wireless carrier Verizon is going to add Skype software to some of its phones, two persons familiar with the matter claimed.

Verizon announced on Friday that it scheduled a press conference with Skype on February 16 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The service would allow customers make Skype calls over Verizon’s 3G data network. However, the company did not comment publickly on the service.

Commenting on the issue, Vanessa Alvarez from Frost & Sullivan said, “The wireless operators and incumbent service providers are starting to think differently and accept these types of partnerships.”

Skype, which is already working on AT&T’s Wi-Fi networks in the United States, has said it would develop a version that would work on AT&T’s 3G network also.

Skype allows subscribers to make cheap international calls usinf a flat-rate broadband service from home. However, it is yet to see whether it would be provide a similar value to wireless customers also.
