Astronauts effectively moved the International Space Station's fancy new observation deck to final resting place on Monday that will give inhabitants of the orbital colony a panoramic view of the station and Earth below. The domed lookout is worth $27 million that is expected to make available unique 360-degree views of Earth, outer space and the space station itself. But they have to wait before watching it.
The shutters on its seven windows will be wide open during the mission's third and final spacewalk Tuesday night and on Wednesday or Thursday. Neither astronauts nor flight controllers can wait to gaze the views.
"It's going to help when we do robotic operations. It'll give us a big view in a lot of different directions", said Terry Virts, Endeavour astronaut in an in-flight interview.
On February 8, Endeavour and six astronauts had blasted off for a 13-day construction mission. Tranquility is being equipped with a toilet, oxygen generator, air scrubber, water recycling system and other equipments to support the live-aboard station crew.
NASA is trying to finish as much as possible on the station before it gives up its fleet of three shuttles later this year.
