Olympic Transport Contract for 2012 Grabbed by FirstGroup
Olympic Transport Contract for 2012 Grabbed by FirstGroup

A stock market announcement stated that FirstGroup has been chosen for transporting spectators to the London 2012 games. This was decided by the Olympic Delivery Authority after it was preferably selected as a bidder for providing almost 1,000 buses and coaches.

This prestigious tender was won following a contest in which many transport companies and bus operators participated. Although the contract is worth mere £20 million in revenue to FirstGroup, it is one of the leading transport contracts to come out of the games.

500 buses and coaches for venue shuttle services and 90 buses and coaches for park-and-ride will be provided by FirstGroup to get spectators to the venues. Network of express coach services to the Olympic Park and Weymouth will also be operated by providing 300 coaches. Buses and coaches' reservation and ticketing systems will also be offered according to the contract.

The London Organizing Committee is yet to award contracts for carrying athletes and the Olympic family of officials and VIPs. Before this contract, the FirstGroup has run fleet buses carrying athletes, officials and the media during the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.
