Bell Aliant Initiates Legal Action Against Rogers Over Internet Ads

Amidst unceasing advertising war in Canadian telecommunications, Bell Aliant has initiated a legal action in a New Brunswick court on Monday.

Atlantic Canada telecom operator Bell Aliant is seeking the New Brunswick court to restrict Rogers Communications Inc. from advertising that it has the fastest and most reliable Internet services in the country.

In addition, spokeswoman Isabelle Robinson said Monday, "Rogers' claims are false and misleading to consumers in New Brunswick and no longer accurate".

Bell Aliant, in partnership with the provincial government of New Brunswick, hopes to possess 70,000 homes and business in Fredericton and Saint John hooked into a high speed Internet service using fiber optic cables by mid-2010.

Robinson quoted, "We have been advertising it as the most advanced broadband network available," she said. "That really hasn't been the advertising platform that we have used at this point".

The federal watchdog recently posted that the claims were misleading under its legislation as consumers are not in a position to compare the speed of Cogeco's services with those of its rivals and there was no way to verify the claims.
