1,100 Couples to Rally, Demanding Funding for Fertilization Treatments

A group of above 1,100 Ontario couples who require help conceiving a child plan to rally outside the legislature Monday, the second annual Family Day holiday, demanding provincial funding for in vitro fertilization treatments.

Currently, Ontario only funds IVF for women with bilaterally blocked Fallopian tubes, which accounts for nearly 10 per cent of patients. The rest have to pay out of the pocket with the average cost being about $10,000.

Joanne Horibe, co-founder of Conceivable Dreams revealed the Liberal government has commissioned two in-depth studies of the issue, both of which recommended the Ontario Health Insurance Plan cover the IVF treatments, which can cost up to $10,000 per cycle.

In-vitro fertilization is one of the safest and most effective infertility treatments, said Horibe.

Many couples undergo three rounds of IVF treatment, at a total cost of about $30,000, said Horibe, who postponed her own wedding to save money for the treatments.

The recent figures report the rate of multiple births resulting from assisted reproduction technologies to be 27.5 per cent in Ontario.
