Past studies have found that menstrual cramps that affect young women can be dealt with using acupuncture.
Researchers from the Oriental Hospital at Kyung Hee University Medical Centre in South Korea found that in an evaluation of 27 studies that was conducted on about 3,000 women, found that acupuncture to be better than several herbal medicines and even drugs.
Researchers said, "There is convincing evidence on the effectiveness of using acupuncture to treat pain as it stimulates the production of endorphins and serotonin in the central nervous system."
It is not known that why do these cramps take place and there is nausea, bloating, vomiting, headache, and dizziness in women along with cramps during menstruation. These conditions can worsen, as women grow older.
For dealing with such cramps common treatments are exercise, applying heat to the lower abdomen and taking painkillers.
The researchers have however stated that more research needs to be done in this field and acupuncture is gathering attention.
