Choice raises food-labeling issue
Australia's food labeling system

Choice, a consumer group, stated that Australia's food labeling system, was misleading people by not displaying proper information of the product, especially those products that contain genetically modified organisms.

According to Choice current labeling laws do not make it clear which foods contain GM and which ones don't.

It was reported that anything could contain GM like meat, sauces, chocolates, and oils.

The group also added that if scientific evidence was to be believed then GM foods are not harmful and more research was needed for this.

The Australian Food and Grocery Council (AFGC), however says that this is false.

AFGC Chief Executive Kate Carnell said, “Choice has conveniently failed to recognize that for almost 10 years, strict labeling regulations have governed all GM foods and ingredients in Australia.”

Industry guidelines state that organic and biodynamic certified foods are not suppose to contain GM ingredients. A majority of people are going in for organic foods now.

Following this several food manufacturers have started providing GM-free food and organic foods need to be labeled properly stating these products ‘contains no genetically modified ingredients’.
