The head of Toyota Motor Corp will testify to U. S. lawmakers next week after lowering succumbing to pressure to explain the company's worst ever safety crisis, outlining the highest profile Japanese executive to encounter a such a grilling from Congress.
Akio Toyoda, the grandson of Toyota's founder, quoted on Friday that he seeks an honest explanation of the issues that caused the recall of millions of vehicles.
Earlier Toyoda claimed he would send the company's North American Chief, and that he had no issues to appear before Congress himself, a stance that was later rebuked by Japan's transport Minister.
The U. S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee invited Toyoda on Thursday, a month into a safety crisis that has blemished its reputation, wounded sales and soaked profits.
"Toyota gave the impression that it was not serious enough about the issue or taking the U. S. market too lightly when it said Mr. Toyoda had no imminent plans to travel to the United States", said Tsutomu Yamada, a market analyst at kabu. com Securities.
Toyota is reported to have recalled above 6 million vehicles in the U. S. market for issues concerning the accelerator problem.
