Google Donates $2m to Wikimedia

Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, proclaimed that Google Inc. has donated an amount of $2m to the Wikimedia Foundation, on Tuesday.

Wikimedia Foundation is essentially a nonprofit organization and runs many websites. Wikipedia. org has emerged as one of the most explored websites for reference.

The foundation shared that Google has donated this amount to help the foundation in expanding its bandwidth and multimedia needs.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin said, “Wikipedia is one of the greatest triumphs of the Internet…this vast repository of community-generated content is an invaluable resource to anyone who is online".

"Considering the rise of server traffic from outside of Europe and the U. S., it's become important for us to look at expanding our data centers in new locations", said Jay Walsh, Wikimedia's spokesman.

He also said that the grant would enable foundation to increase contributions students and academicians.

During January, Wikimedia has received more than $8m in donations.
