Every one out of fifty people is suffering from dysmorphic disorder. It is related to the psyche of a particular person who is obsessed with the way he/she looks.
For example, a 25 year old Martin was obsessed with mirrors, as she hanged mirrors in almost every corner of her house, so that she can be reminded about her ugliness. She thought that she looked ugly, plump and shapeless.
UCLA scientists have managed to conclude, that people who are afflicted with BDD have a flaw in visual processing.
"In order to understand body dismorph disorder and visual processing, we did a type of brain scan”, said Dr. Jamie Fuesner, who is a psychiatrist.
The brains of as many as 17 BDD patients were studied by Jamie Feusner, with the help of functional MRIs. He revealed that when the patients gazed at the “low-detail” face, they were not able to reply.
Feusner said,” Their brains were underactive for processing shape and configuration. They may be seeing details, but in isolation”.
Jessica Martin, who suffered from her obsession with mirrors used to go out of her home at night only, but now her life is completely different. Cognitive therapy has helped her a lot.
