As winter storms hit the country hammering the markets for the three big weekend openings, Jim Carrey's new comedy 'Yes Man' grabbed first position at the box office ($18.2-million), with Will Smith's 'Seven Pounds' ($16-million) at second place, while animated feature film 'The Tale of Despereaux' about a heroic mouse, castles and dungeons, came in at No. 3 ($10.5-million).
Rounding out the Top Five were two holdovers i. e. Keanu Reeves sci-fi saga 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' still going strong in its second week slipped from No. 1 to No. 4 ($10.2-million) and 4-week-old 'Four Christmases', which with $7.7-million as its weekend take, broke $100-million in total box-office sales.
Bad weather saw many parents digging themselves out over the weekend, especially in the badly hit Northeast, with box office receipts down 81% compared to last week, in contrast to Los Angeles , which only experienced a 1% downward trend.
Limited releases like Clint Eastwood's 'Gran Torino', 'Slumdog Millionaire,' 'Doubt' and 'Frost/Nixon' had strong showings, and while winter came with a bang with storms pounding the country, Hollywood's year seems to be going out with a whimper. However, given the sour economy, studio executives are more or less satisfied with this year's results, as Hollywood has the tendency of riding out recessions, since compared to other entertainment options like concerts or sports events, films are relatively inexpensive though solid business.
