Google Gets Government’s Approval to Sell Power Like A Utility

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has granted its approval to Google, to become an electricity marketer, permitting it to buy and resell electricity, fulfilling Google's December request.

A Google spokesperson posted in January, "Google is interested in procuring more renewable energy as part of our carbon neutrality commitment, and the ability to buy and sell energy on the wholesale market could give us more flexibility in doing so".

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission unanimously approved Google's request for its market-based rate authority. Currently, the Internet Company doesn't own generation facilities or transmission lines to service power and not reported to plan to use the new authority for retail purposes, FERC officials said before the commission voted at its monthly meeting.

Google is already a utility computing provider -- millions of people get search and Web services supported by Google. Now Google will fortify those utilities as a power utility provider.

With its power and broadband plays Google is widening its sphere in markets that are important to its business.

Google is even fighting to expand its real estate footprint around its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters, proving that the rise of Google Creep in the digital world is bleeding over to the physical realm.
