Obesity on a rise on death certificates

Obesity is on a rise in England and it is causing deaths that are rising every year, researchers say.

According to death certificates in 2009 there were 757 obesity related deaths which was more as compared with 358 in 2000.

University of Oxford team said there were many unrecorded deaths due to obesity.

Scottish government warned of a ticking time bomb while stating that by 2030 about 40 per cent Scots could be obese.

According to researchers due to death certificates not being considered always, obesity was rarely listed as the main cause of death.

In 2009 over 190 people died who were less than 65 years of age due to obesity.

Study leader Professor Michael Goldacre said, "We know for example obesity contributes to heart disease but if someone dies of heart disease you don't necessarily expect doctors to note if they were obese.”
