H1N1 pandemic

H1N1 pandemic has been discussed that includes information on whether the flu activity has past its peak or not. The World Health Organization's flu experts met on Tuesday to discuss this.

The announcement regarding flu activity’s post-peak period is expected to be announced on Wednesday.

WHO spokesperson Gregory Hartl in Geneva said, "The main question will be to advise the WHO on whether we are still in phase six or whether we in effect have moved to what is called the post-peak period. The pandemic will not be declared over."

A committee comprising about 15 experts is expected to make recommendations to the WHO director-general Dr Margaret Chan, who will further notify the health ministries of the agency's 193 member states and the Vatican.

H1N1 has otherwise declined in most of the Northern Hemisphere that includes the United States and Canada.

According to WHO, there are H1N1 outbreaks outside the normal flu season in West Africa, and the worst effected people are the younger lot.

Reports said that there have been 16,000 deaths worldwide since the virus emerged in North America last March.
