High Cost and Level of Income Determine Broadband Access in U.S
Broadband

According to a survey, Broadband Adoption and Use in America, conducted last year, one-third of American adults do not have a fast internet connection at home.

Followed by the survey, the FCC presented Congress a plan to make broadband omnipresent and reasonable.

The aim of the survey was to determine why broadband adoption is so low and what it can do if everybody has access to faster internet connection.

The causes mainly adhere to high costing. The monthly rent is too high; a computer costs too much, installation costs too much and so on. According to the FCC, the average monthly broadband fee is $4.1

Digital Hopefuls, a category that leans heavily toward Hispanic and African Americans, are of the view that broadband would be good, but many lack the money and skills needed to get online.

There was also a bunch, mostly oldies who have possibly retired, who will never take on internet. The FCC describes them as “Digitally Distant”.

The survey also found out that family income and education were also key factors responsible for no broadband connection at home. 52% of Americans with annual income of $50,000 or below have broadband at home, compared with 87% with fewer earnings.

The FCC’s national broadband plan is due to Congress on March 17.
