During a series of dive surveys conducted by the CSIRO, the scientists found a new species of stingray at Ningaloo Marine Park.
They claim that the ray belongs to maskray family.
WA Environment Minister Donna Faragher said that the ray has a maximum wingspan of 30cm. "Since the find at Ningaloo, we have been able to establish that this species also exists 400km further south in Shark Bay. The very specific habitat occupied by this ray means that careful monitoring and management is required. They also live close to the shore, so people may encounter the creature close-up", said Dr. Will White.
So far the department has recognized 47 species of rays, claiming the existence of up to 118 species in the marine park.
