To cut down the costs, Pacific Brands has recently shed more than 3000 jobs. The company is also looking forward to shift some of its manufacturing outlets offshore.
Chief Executive Sue Morphet said, "As we worked through the processes and found more efficiency we realized we can manage with less people than we thought in the first instance". The company reported a net profit of $22.2 million in the last six months of 2009.
"We announced right at the beginning that there would be 1800 manufacturing staff and 650 admin but we've taken more admin people from the business than we thought we would", said Ms. Morphet said.
Later in the day, Pacific Brands' Spokeswoman Sue Cato clarified that out of the 3000 laid off employees, 940 had been transferred when the four Pacific businesses were sold.
Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union Victorian secretary, Michele O'Neil, said that the employees, who lost their jobs, are suffering unemployment.
"There is nothing to celebrate about the loss of thousands of jobs over a 12-month period. The company says it has made significant achievements for all concerned but I am horrified by the notion that a company can describe sacking 2500 Australian workers as a significant achievement. It's not for the workers who are unemployed and their families", said Ms. O'Neil.
