A survey revealed the fact that the so called “healthy soup products” available in all the shops and street corners have high levels of salt in it that may lead to heart attack, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, obesity and kidney stones and kidney disease.
About 575 soups were inspected by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) and high amount of salt was found in household brands like Batchelors and Heinz. 99% of the soups investigated contained more salt per portion if compared with a packet of fries.
EAT, a national chain of 98 sandwich shops, puts 8.07g salt in chicken curry soup in a 907g serving which is almost equal to the salt in three McDonald's Big Macs and fries.
Food Standard Agency has decided that there will be only 0.6g salt per 100g, as its overuse may prove hazardous to health.
Though there is a 17% drop in the amount of salt in ready-to-eat ranges since a survey was conducted in 2007. Cash urges the manufacturers to lessen the salt content from their food as early as possible.
Cash Chairman, Professor Graham MacGregor said, "The majority of the food industry is slowly taking out the salt from food, including these soups. We commend the progress so far; however they haven't gone far enough if we are to save the maximum number of lives”.
