GM to Shut Hummer After Sale Collapse

With the Chinese regulators putting down the purchase of its Hummer brand by Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co., the General Motors has decided to close Hummer.

"The Government still wants overseas acquisitions as long as it fits into its plans", said Wang Liusheng. ''We are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed'', said John Smith, GM's Vice President of Corporate Planning and Alliances.

GM's spokesperson Nick Richards invited the last minute bids for the brand, which employs about 3,000 people.

As per the agreement with Tengzhong, the company would have got an 80 percent stake, if the purchase would have got through.

After Saturn, Hummer is the second brand of GM that witnessed a collapse of sale. GM sold Swedish brand Saab to Dutch carmaker Spyker Cars NV, earlier this year. Pontiac is being discontinued.

GM is now concentrating on its four remaining brands viz. Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac and Buick.
