Bombardier to Purchase Trains Worth $11.5bn

Witnessing a remarkable position in the global market, Bombardier Inc. will place an order worth $11.5 billion for the purchase of 80 regional double-deck trains.

Bombardier formally received mega-rail contract from France's Société nationale de chemins de fer (SNCF), yesterday.

Bombardier Transportation spokesperson Anne Froger said that deal is a big takeover for Bombardier.

"It's good that there's enough to go around so that everyone can eat", she said.

The trains would be delivered between June 2013 and December 2015.

The first 80 trains would be running in Aquitaine, Bretagne, centre, Nord-Pas de Calais, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and Rhône-Alpes.

Froger further said that the Crespin factory in Northern France will employ 300 people initially to take the new TER design from the drawing board to the factory floor.

One estimate said that in the last decade, Alstom has won contracts for 520 trains in France while Bombardier, the world's largest railway- equipment manufacturer, has signed deals for 500 trains in that country - plus 200 options.

Facing a loss, reported mostly by the flashier aircraft division, Bombardier's rail division has been become its main source of growth. Its regional and business aircraft groups have both cut down thousands of jobs in the last two years.
