Computer Malfunction in Facebook

On Thursday, the social-networking company said that an anonymous number of Facebook users had their messages sent to the wrong people for a while on Wednesday after a computer problem. This has raised questions about privacy on the site.

A spokesperson from Facebook said that the company is still looking into the problem and does not have specific data on the number of people affected by the glitch.

Facebook user Pablo S. Torre said that at about 8:30 Wednesday night, he began receiving messages that were clearly not meant for him. He estimates that he received "well over 100" emails in the span of an hour and a half.

"I literally have people's private correspondence with their names attached", he said. "I'm very curious to see how Facebook deals with this".

Facebook said in a statement, "Our engineers diagnosed the problem moments after it began and are working to get everything back in its rightful place".

The email malfunction is a cause of concern about privacy on Facebook and other social networking sites where people share their personal information.

Companies such as Google and Facebook have been in rivalry for users who send and store information ranging from public updates to private emails and conversations.

With this, the privacy policies of the sites have also come under attack, as has the websites' ability to protect users' information.
