The business rating and review site Yelp has been imposed with a lawsuit this week by two law firms, alleging unfair business practices and extortion.
The class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of a veterinary hospital in California which seeks Yelp to eradicate a negative review, however, was then denied.
Sales representatives from Yelp posted the hospital at least once a week demanding a check for $300 to make bad reviews go away.
"There has been a long history of people accusing Yelp of monkeying around with reviews in exchange for money", Stoppelman wrote in the post. "The allegations are disappointing, not only because they are false, but because they ignore empirical evidence in favor of conspiracy theories".
Yelp has unceasingly faced allegations from media outlets and businesses who reveal that its advertising sales team runs a shady business of offering to remove or hide negative customer reviews in exchange for payments.
These were outlined most significantly in an expose in the East Bay Express newspaper about a year ago, in which dozen small business owners claimed that Yelp representatives would call them repeatedly to see if they wanted to pay to have negative reviews made less prominent.
