As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, that aims to raise awareness of fair-trade products, The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Terry Hall will be seen handing out free bananas in Guildhall Square this Tuesday, 2 March, starting at 11:30am till 3pm.
At the annual event, which kicked off on the 22nd of February, people are being urged to fill their shopping baskets with Fairtrade products rather than their usual purchases.
The Fairtrade Foundation, that celebrates fair and ethical trading values with this annual event, is hoping to hit “one million and one” switches to Fairtrade products, as part of the Big Swap initiative.
According to the foundation, “It is now easier than ever to switch to Fairtrade, with over 3,000 products for people to choose from”.
“The campaign is focusing its attention on tea in particular, and asking people to swap their morning cuppa for a Fairtrade one”, it added.
A total of 264,047 swaps have been made so far, with people pledging to swap their daily caffeine and chocolate fixes, fruit and vegetables and even clothes to the Fairtrade alternatives.
"Every swap will be proof that the people of the UK want producers in the developing world to get a fairer deal", the foundation said.
