According to the latest news, Cadbury is being acquired by the American food major, Kraft Foods. Nearly 71.73% of Cadbury shareholders are interested in this offer. After the acquisition materialises, it would result in one of the largest food companies in the world.

The deal will get Cadbury shareholders 0.202664 new Kraft shares and 475 pence in cash per Cadbury share and those who want additional cash will get 799 pence in cash per Cadbury share.

After the Cadbury-Kraft merger takes place, the combined group will have dominant presence in markets across the world including India, and over 40 confectionery brands with each of them having annual sales in excess of $100 million.

The deal has already received European Union regulators approval on the condition that the US-based food major sells off the British confectioner's Polish and Romanian chocolate businesses.

Meanwhile, Britain's largest workers union, Unite, has cautioned that around 30,000 jobs would be put at risk if US-based Kraft Foods takes over Cadbury and the UK confectioner would be weigh downed with a 22 billion pound debt.

It is surprising that in spite of Cadbury doing so well on its own, seeing that the company is growing 6% year-on-year for the past four consecutive years, shareholders are keen on taking the offer by the American Food.

It is also speculated that the Cadbury brand would lose its identity if it is included in Kraft's contrasting portfolio that stretches from processed cheese to groceries.
