Parity Law Needs Better Mental Health Programs
Parity Law Needs Better Mental Health Programs

The law applies to groups of above 50 employees and is planned to end needless and arbitrary restriction on care. Higher charges, steeper co-pays and other limitations are no longer acceptable for mental health and substance abuse therapy.

Some weeks ago, the Obama administration announced 154 pages of rules which will be implemented on the law. The rules and regulations are scheduled to be effective July 1.

The law is not valid for individual insurance policies and it does not require group policy to offer mental health and substance abuse treatment, but most do.

Business officials and insurance industry groups revealed there in satisfaction with the rules. But, mental health sponsors highly praised the rules, as Americans facing schizophrenia will receive the same care provided to those suffering with leukemia. A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern that occurs in an individual and causes distress or disability.

Studies have revealed that equality expands coverage without considerably rising costs. An analysis in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2006 established that President Bill Clinton's 1999 parity order moving the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program better access to mental health services with no increase in costs.
