Clot-bursting Drug Mandatory for Female Stroke Patients

Female stroke patients, who are denied plasminogen activator (a clot-bursting drug tissue), can have more disastrous effects, as compared to male stroke patients who don't receive the same.

The scientists scrutinized information from a stroke database on 2,113 people who had experienced a stroke. Out of them 232 were treated with the clot-busting drug, with 44% of female stroke patients.

Both the sexes were divided in two groups based on the fact that they got the tPA within three hours after their stroke. Later on they were inquired telephonically about their well being. It was found that after duration of six months, women who were not provided the clot-bursting drug fared worse than men. But women who were given this treatment were keeping good health same as men who consumed the clot-bursting drug.

The possible reasons for women not faring well can be many. Probably some of them do not have anybody to after their health. Women suffer more from post-stroke depression as compared to men which is a strong reason of their deteriorating health and gradual recovery.

Dr. Michael D. Hill, study author of the University of Calgary in Canada said, "Women need to be treated for stroke as soon as possible. We found that women who weren't treated had a worse quality of life after stroke than men. However, the good news is that women who were treated responded just as well as men to the treatment".
