Alberta Children's Hospital Medical Reports Awaited

One year after the three severe medication errors at Alberta Children's Hospital including an accidental overdose of a narcotic, an accidental overdose of a drug to suppress the immune system, and one case where a medication was incorrectly administered through an intravenous line instead of through a tube to the stomach, questions still linger regarding the independent investigation to be conducted by the Health Quality Council of Alberta.

"That is a very long delay. It's something that should have been out within weeks", said Alberta Liberal Leader David Swann.

"We're working closely with the families affected and with the on their recommendations, and with Alberta Health and Wellness", said Mark Kastner of Alberta Health Services.

"We gave it to them in October of last year", said Chief Executive Dr. John Cowell.

Alberta Health Services had got a 6% boost to its base funding in 2010-11 as part of a five-year plan in the 2010 provincial budget. It is hoped that its $1.3-billion accumulated deficit will slay over two years.

Identified as the No. 1 priority by the Government; spending on health and wellness is likely to rise nearly by 17%. High-priority surgeries are being ramped up across the province for six weeks under an $8-million plan.
